Astrid Lindgren

Astrid Anna Emilia Lindgren (born Ericsson; Swedish: [ˈastrɪd ˈlɪŋɡreːn]; 14 November 1907 – 28 January 2002) was a Swedish writer of fiction and screenplays. She is best known for her children's book series featuring Pippi Longstocking, Emil i Lönneberga, Karlsson-on-the-Roof, and the Six Bullerby Children (Children of Noisy Village in the US), as well as her children's fantasy novels Mio min Mio, Ronia the Robber's Daughter and The Brothers Lionheart.

As of May 2013, she is the world's 18th most translated author and the third most translated children's books author after H. C. Andersen and the Grimm brothers. Lindgren has sold roughly 144 million books worldwide.

Biography

Astrid Lindgren grew up in Näs, near Vimmerby, Småland, Sweden, and many of her books are based on her family and childhood memories and landscapes.

Lindgren was the daughter of Samuel August Ericsson and Hanna Jonsson. She had two sisters, Stina and Ingegerd, and a brother, Gunnar Ericsson, who eventually became a member of the Swedish parliament.

"Auf Wiedersehen" (German for "Goodbye") is a song co-written by Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen and bassist Tom Petersson and first released on the band's 1978 album Heaven Tonight. It was also released as a single as the B-side of "Surrender". Since its original release, it has also been released by Cheap Trick on several live and compilation albums, including Budokan II; Sex, America, Cheap Trick; The Essential Cheap Trick, and the 30th Anniversary Edition of Cheap Trick at Budokan, which also includes a DVD with a video performance of the song.Allmusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine described the song as one of the peaks of Heaven Tonight and as one of Cheap Trick's "stone-cold classics." It has often been used by the band to close their concerts. Since its original release, it has been covered by Anthrax, John Easdale and Steel Pole Bath Tub.

The subject of the song is suicide and is one of two suicide themed songs on Heaven Tonight, the other being the title track. However, different commentators have different views of the Cheap Trick's attitude towards the subject matter. Mitchell Schneider of Rolling Stone Magazine finds some of the lyrics "compellingly moronic," making the song an example of Andy Warhol's philosophy that "We should really stay babies for much longer than we do, now that we're living so much longer."Dennis Cooper of SPIN Magazine considers the song as virtually extolling the virtue of suicide. Critic Bryan Wawzenek also remarked that the song makes suicide seem fun.Billboard Magazine considered "Auf Wiedersehen" to be a powerful anti-suicide song. Astrid (satellite)

Astrid-1 and Astrid-2 were two microsatellites designed and developed by Swedish Space Corporation on behalf of the Swedish National Space Board. They were piggyback launched on a Cosmos-3M launch vehicle from Plesetsk, Russia. Astrid 1 on January 24, 1995 and Astrid 2 on December 10, 1998.

Sweden's first microsatellite was piggybacked with the launch of Tsikada, a Russian navigation satellite and FAISAT, a United States communications satellite.

It carried an Energetic Neutral Atom imager called PIPPI (Prelude in Planetary Particle Imaging), an Electron Spectrometer called EMIL (Electron Measurements - In-situ and Lightweight) and two UV imagers called MIO (Miniature Imaging Optics), one for imaging the Earth's aurora and one for observing Lyman alpha-emission from the Earth's geocorona. This payload, named after characters in Astrid Lindgren's books (the idea came from a Russian scientist ), was developed by the Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Kiruna.

Astrid (application)

Astrid was a multi-platform to-do list and task management application that was created in Israel in 2008. It was identified by the company's octopus icon. The service reminded users of scheduled tasks and was designed for limited integration with Google Calendar. Yahoo! acquired the company on May 1, 2013 and shuttered the Astrid service on August 5, 2013.

2008: Astrid was co-founded by Tim Sue and Jon Paris in Israel

May 2013: Astrid co-founder and CEO Jon Paris announced on the company's blog on May 1 that Yahoo! had acquired Astrid.

July 2013: In an early July 2013 announcement, the public was made aware of Yahoo's scheduled closure of the task management service Astrid.

August 2013: Yahoo discontinued the service on August 5. The team at Astrid supplied its customers with a data export tool and recommended former competitors such as Any.do, Sandglaz, Wrike, and Wunderlist.
